Todd Pletcher and his Remarkable Contribution to Thoroughbred Racing
Behind every successful horse is a competent and a hard working trainer. Victories in the fickle horse racing business may be a fluke once in a while but not when it becomes a trend because the trend has to be set and it does, only when someone strives hard sweating every inch to excel. Horses are intelligent animals but even they need a guiding light that helps them bring out the best they are capable of.
Racing fraternity may have seen numerous racing horses excelling on the tracks but very few thoroughbred trainers have made it big in the business in a way that when see their horses on the racetracks, they know exactly what signature excellence they shall be witnessing in a short while. And talking about extraordinary isn’t justified until we mention consecutively three times winner of the Eclipse Award as Top Trainer, Todd Pletcher.
Working as a hot walker since he was seven and assisting his dad Jake Pletcher, Todd started very early in the racing business spending all his time apart from studies into learning about the animals and the mathematics and chemistry of the game. By the time Todd joined to college, he had already taken up grooming responsibilities for leading trainer D.Wayne Lukas having spent a considerable amount of time with another Hall of Fame reputed trainer Charlie Whittingham. Todd picked up fast and soon the 1967 Dallas born equestrian boy was promoted to assistant for Wayne Lukas’s and contributing majorly to training horses many of which became paramount to their name and reputation.
Soon racehorses like Thunder Gulch, Serena’s Song and Majestic Number started getting plated up for the tournaments starting 1995. And the opening was magnificent for Todd. His 2004 season incredibility start with Ashado winning the Kentucky Oaks and moving on to conquer Breeder’s Cup Distaff made him an instant star. Pletcher produced another scintillating star from his stable, Speightstown who captured the award for Outstanding Sprint runner for the year, 2004 again, adding another feather to Todd’s amazing work as a trainer.
What followed was a rage of victories and record setting performances, now that Todd had found his firm spot in the horse racing arena. While in 2005 Pletcher created history by setting up a single season’s racing earnings at approximately $21million which he obliterated himself and set another, this time it was a season’s earnings at approximately $27million. The year 2006 also surpassed another legendary record set by Todd’s mentor Wayne Lukas, 92 stakes win. Todd had won more than 100 stakes and was the new owner of this record as well.
While a Triple Crown is has still eluded this superb trainer’s wishlist, Todd made his first Kentucky Derby win eventually with Super Saver last year and made a Belmont Stakes debut in 2007 with rags to Riches. This year, its Todd’s horse Uncle Mo who as a three year old making the news and is being counted as one of the most coveted contenders for the Breeder’s Cup Classic.
